The Children's Trust:
Reuben's Story

Mum: “A piece of Miracle Equipment”

Reuben is 16 years old, 6ft 2”, and was admitted to the hospital in February 2025 following the diagnosis of a brain tumour in the posterior fossa, an area that affects balance and coordination across the whole body. At the time, Reuben was very unwell and fighting multiple infections. He needed full care and was unable to move.

  • Before becoming unwell, Reuben was a fit and active teenager. He went to the gym four to five times a week, enjoyed gaming with friends, and was exploring future career options such as becoming an electrician or a hairdresser. The sudden change in his mobility and independence was a major shift.

Reuben was admitted to The Children’s Trust in July.  Since his admission, he has made steady progress. He is currently using the GH3+ ceiling hoist and Trainer Module to support key rehabilitation activities, including sit-to-stand transfers, walking with assistance, and even playing football.

These tools are helping him safely rebuild strength, coordination, and confidence. The support of the hoist has allowed earlier mobility as the risks to both Reuben and those working with him are significantly reduced.

  • His mum describes the ceiling hoist as “a piece of miracle equipment”, something that enables Reuben to feel like he’s walking by himself.  “It builds self-esteem and strength safely,” she says. “The more effort he puts in, the more he can see what he’s achieving.”

Reuben's rehabilitation process highlights the importance of tailored rehabilitation, the right assistive technology, and the motivation of a young person determined to get back to doing what he loves.

At present, Reuben is working towards several personal goals. He wants to return to school and study Design Technology. He’s aiming to walk independently and get back to the gym. He hopes to play pool with his dad, talk with friends while gaming, and rebuild his daily routine: brushing his teeth, shaving, and brushing his hair. He also wants to regain the ability to use his phone and computer confidently and eventually pursue a career path that excites him.

  • Although he cannot currently do any of these things, each step forward is bringing him closer.

The Children's Trust

The Children’s Trust is the UK’s leading charity for children with brain injuries and neuro disabilities, providing expert rehabilitation, education, and care. Its facilities are designed to meet the complex needs of young people undergoing intensive therapy, and recent investments in assistive technology are already making a measurable impact.

The installation of four GH3+ ceiling hoists with Trainer Modules was a transformative addition to the trust. These include a room covering system with GH3+, a Trainer Module, and positioning lock in their training room, as well as a straight rail system along a long corridor, specifically designed to support gait training. The remaining two hoists are in the lounge areas to improve accessibility and comfort during everyday activities. This allows the children to engage in rehabilitation in a safe, supported, and dynamic environment.
