Penny Townsend:
Nadia's Story

Building Independence with Dynamic Weight Relief Training

Nadia, now thirty-five, continues to build on the foundations of her earlier rehabilitation journey. Living with dystonic cerebral palsy affecting control of her whole body, alongside a dislocated right hip and leg length discrepancy, she relies on her powered wheelchair for independent mobility. She is hearing-impaired and uses a cochlear implant, supported by lip-reading and her understanding of British Sign Language. Although spasticity and reduced selective movement in her upper limbs limit the precision of her own signing, she communicates thoughtfully and expressively through both adapted sign and her Dynavox. She has never allowed her physical challenges to restrict her sense of adventure and remains a passionate traveller with a love for skiing, gigs and festivals.

Her long-standing physiotherapist, Penny Townsend, has worked with her since 2016, carefully guiding her through changes in her physical presentation and adapting her programme as necessary. In an earlier case story documenting Nadia’s work with Penny, dynamic support from the Guldmann Trainer Module allowed Nadia to practise sit-to-stand and walking with far less physical effort required from the therapist. In those early sessions, Penny would support Nadia’s full body weight during stepping and ambulation. The Trainer Module allowed only fingertip support, enabling Nadia to move more freely around the room and choose her direction and duration of walking. This reduction in therapist strain, combined with increased freedom of movement for Nadia, was recognised as a key factor in her progression.

Today, the contrast with those first sessions could not be clearer. She has made some of the most significant improvements of Penny’s clients using the Trainer Module. When she first began this phase of training, Nadia needed substantial hands-on guidance for both sit-to-stand and walking. Over time, however, she has developed the strength, balance, and motor control required to perform sit-to-stand independently while wearing the Active Vest, requiring no weight offset at all.

Her walking has progressed in equally impressive ways. Using the Trainer Module set to provide approximately 9kg of dynamic weight relief, she is now able to walk the full length of the training room without any hands-on support from Penny. This growing independence reflects the earlier benefits described in her original case story, in which the Trainer Module enabled her to participate more actively in gait training and to improve her confidence in her own movement.

Functional stepping is another essential part of Nadia’s training. She practises step-ups using a box step, an activity that directly supports her ability to step back into her wheelchair safely and effectively. Her increased strength is clear in the smoother, more controlled way she now manages this task. The cardiovascular component of her programme is equally important; although sessions understandably fatigue her, her support staff consistently report that she now recovers more quickly and is noticeably less tired later in the day after training.

  • The holistic impact of Nadia’s progress, spanning strength, independence, endurance, confidence, and reduced reliance on physical support, highlights the effectiveness of combining dynamic weight relief technology with skilled, consistent physiotherapy. It also showcases what is possible when the same individual’s story continues across time. The Nadia first seen working with Penny in her original Trainer Module case story is the very same Nadia who now moves with far greater autonomy, demonstrating just how transformative structured rehabilitation in the right environment can be.

Nadia trains at Simply Moving and Sleeping, an adaptable rehabilitation space designed to support functional practice and safe mobility work.
