A Guldmann ceiling hoist system was recently installed in the Non-Invasive Respiratory Therapy Department (NILO) at the Pulmonology Clinic of Semmelweis University in Hungary. The state-of-the-art hoist system with a built-in scale primarily helps when lifting and moving bariatric patients.

Until now, nurses and porters have carried out the task of lifting overweight patients in the clinic. Sometimes it would require 6-7 people to lift one patient, recalls Judit H. Ballai, the head of the Pulmonology Clinic. For patients over 120-150 kg who are unable to move independently, the ceiling hoist system solves a serious care problem, he stressed. The system has a load capacity of 350 kg.

Covid-19 has led to an increase in the number of bariatric patients, whom it is a constant challenge to move and handle, the matron said. As the disease has an increased impact on overweight patients, many have been admitted to the department in severe condition and the lifting and handling of these have bound up more staff.

The hoist system primarily lightens the day-to-day work of the nurses, since the lifting, handling and turning of the patients, can be carried out with less energy and in a shorter time.

"Part of the lifting system is a strong sling, which is laid under the patient, and once this is done, two people can handle and care for a patient who is unable to move, without much effort," explained the clinic's chief nurse.

The patient hoist system saves time and energy, but more importantly, it saves the health and strength of nurses and increases patient comfort, said Péter Danis, deputy head of the NILO department.

Peter Danis also mentions that the built-in digital scale in the Guldmann hoist is a great advantage. It provides an accurate weight of the patient and by checking the weight of bed-bound patients daily, it is possible to determine the need for additional treatment and therapy.

Guldmann distributor Allegro was in charge of guiding the Clinic to the right solution and carrying out the installation.
